Prinshof School for the Visually Impaired

Principal: Mrs Karin Swart

Prinshof School for the Visually Impaired is a multicultural, dual-medium (English and Afrikaans) school situated in the central business district of Pretoria. Opened in 1963, the school now caters for 404 blind and partially sighted learners from grade R to grade 12 of whom approximately 70% are from previously disadvantaged communities.

The school has seven hostels on its premises. Learners are drawn from all over the country and hostel accommodation is provided to 215 learners who cannot travel to school on a daily basis. School transport is provided for day scholars in the Pretoria area.

Prinshof School consists of a grade R class, a primary school, a secondary school, a section dedicated to the needs of learners with multiple handicaps and a special education section focussing on practical skills for the workplace. Learners at Prinshof follow the same curriculum as learners at mainstream schools in Gauteng and write the Senior Certificate examinations. Subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Science, Music, Life Science, Economics, Business Studies, Consumer Studies and Computer Application Technology are taught with great success to blind matriculants. Many former students study at various universities and follow courses in Actuarial Mathematics, Informatics, Music and Humanities. The school has a proud record of a 100% matric pass rate for 20 consecutive years.

Auxiliary services at the school include an educational psychologist, four occupational therapists, a nursing sister, a general medical clinic and low-vision evaluation by a voluntary ophthalmologist and optometrist. Orientation, mobility training and skills for daily living play a vital role in the holistic education of the visually impaired child.

The activities of the Music Magnet Centre involve choirs, orchestras, ballroom dancing, tap dancing, gumboot dancing, African drums and individual music lessons. The computer centre is equipped with the necessary software for blind and low-vision learners, as well as braille and ordinary printing facilities and free internet for all learners and staff. The extramural programme includes swimming, athletics, soccer and a gym, as well as opportunities for learners to participate in the annual SA Championships for the Physically Disabled. Learners are also encouraged to participate in the Representative Council of Learners. The school is currently in the process of being upgraded by the Gauteng Department of Education.
