Transvalia embarks on a big journey Druk Epos
Transvalia-skool is planning a major project for 2010, which entails building a brand new media centre and transforming an old media centre into a state of the art Computer Laboratory.

The need
Transvalia-schools’ project entails erecting a new media centre and converting the current media centre into a computer laboratory.  The total budget for this process is R115 000.

The reality
Most of our learners experience severe reading disabilities which have to addressed in all possible ways (this holds true in all five of the Institute's schools, as well as in main stream schools).  One of the most important means of addressing their reading disabilities is by remedial computerised programs.

The process
As reading forms the basis of teaching and learning at school, we want to provide learners with modern facilities to help them cope with their schoolwork.  Reading programs on computers are therefore a very important means to address their reading problems.

The school has two computer laboratories.  One of the laboratories is part of the Gauteng On Line project of the Department of Education.  This laboratory was provided by the Department and it can only utilized according to the department’s regulations, which does not allow us to install programs of our choice.  The main purpose is to teach learners computer literacy and to assist with research.

The second laboratory is almost fully utilized for Computer Applications Technology, which is one of the subjects for grade 10, 11 and 12 learners.

The school has an excellent reading program which cannot be used to the full due to the above mentioned reasons.

According to studies done by universities the average reading ability of first year students are at present very poor.  One of the reasons being the neglect of developing good reading skills in schools, due to the educational methods which schools had to apply in the recent past.

However, most learners in Transvalia School experience severe reading problems due to neurological reasons.  Their poor reading ability has a serious negative effect on their school performance.
